March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' birthday!!!

In honor of his birthday we have decided to recognize Dr. Seuss this week .  We are not the only ones honoring him this week, though. The National Education Association has declared March 2nd as Read Across America Day.  This week reminds us it is important to celebrate our favorite Dr. Seuss books.  Make sure you check out our Shelfari to see all of the amazing books created by Dr. Seuss.

Take the Dr. Seuss Reading Oath!

The Reader’s Oath
I promise to read
Each day and each night
I know it’s the key
To growing up right
I’ll read to myself
I’ll read to a crowd
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.
I’ll read at my desk
At home and at school
On my bean bag or bed
By the fire or pool.
Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head
Cause brains grow more thoughts
The more they are fed.
So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.

Dr. Seuss also has a website full of wonderful activities and games to help students learn as well.

Justin Bieber loves Dr. Seuss as much as we do!

  1. I liked the Dr. Suess Reading Oath. It's also cool how you link Justin Bieber in with it too. I many people my age don't appreciate Justin Bieber, but a lot of younger kids do. It's also cool that you did a blog for Dr. Suess for his birthday.

  2. I also really like the Dr. Seuss Reading Oath. I share a birthday with Dr. Seuss on March 2nd so I have always loved him. I think this oath would be great to display in a classroom. Children could even decorate it and sign it to make it their own.

  3. I agree with both Katie and Michelle. I think that teachers could make it into a bookmark and the students could sign it and decorate it. Younger children love Justin Bieber so if they see him reading they will want to read too.

  4. I love this Oath! I find all of Dr. Seuss' works to be quirky and fun. This oath is no different, and I think children would also find it enjoyable. I think Kellsie's idea of displaying this Oath on a bookmark would be a great way for student's to remember the Oath, and to remind them that all types of reading are important. I also found the link providing Dr. Seuss inspired activities very helpful. I think all teacher's and future teacher's would agree that all classroom activities that relate to Dr. Seuss' would be helpful to students.

  5. Dr. Seuss' oath was vary inspiring! Every line had a certain meaning to it and that brought it all together in the end. I love how there is a true meaning behind it all and at the same time its fun and easy for children to read and understand. I thought the book mark idea from Kellsie was a really cool idea for children.
I also found the clip with Justin Bieber in it very interesting. He is very popular with young children and I believe that the clip sent out a message to children, and how important reading really is.

  6. I loved Dr. Suess' oath. Dr. Suess was always one of my favorite authors. It was amazing at how he could take only a few key words and turn them into great stories that have been read for generations. I think if you showed the Justin video to kids they would automatically connect, I like how he was incorporated in your blog.

  7. Growing up, Dr. Suess's was always one of my favorite authors. I find it to be amazing how generation after generation, children around the world are still reading these books. The messages throughout these books, I believe are life long ones. I loved the Dr. Suess's oath. I think that by adding some of today's pop stars, like Justin Bieber, it helps children relate and connect more with it.

  8. I loved Dr. Suess's oath!! It was very powerful and inspiring. As a little kid Dr. Suess was one of my favorite authors. I remember loving how everything flowed and rhymed. I also thought the reading my Justin Bieber was great. Getting celebrities that kids look up to to express the importance of reading is a great way to get kids to like reading and want to participate. I would like to see more celebrities join in on this idea.

  9. Growing up Dr.Suess' books were my favorite books. In third grade I remember we had to recite Dr.Suess Oath to our school. I love his imagination in the books is like that of a young kids and they can just think of the funniest things. It is amazing how many generations have passed down his books to others. I really enjoyed the Justin Bieber video kids really look up to celebrities so when they show their love for something the kids try to copy that.

  10. I love Dr. Suess, I think he was a great author and I love how they are still making books the same way he did when he fist started. His Oath is one that kids should really look up to and take. Reading is a big part of life and if they see that reading can be fun it will help them see that it's not a bad thing. Kids seeing people they look up to like their parents, an older sibling or even a celebrate reading all the time is a great thing for them!

  11. Dr Seuss was one of my favorite authors as a child. I loved how everything rhymed an they were usually silly stories that made me laugh which made them enjoyable. This along with bringing in popular people of the age like Justin Bieber will make reading more enjoyable for kids. I also though the reader's oath was a great idea to show kids so they can decide for themselves if they want to o it or not.

  12. Dr. Seuss is one of the best authors for children's books. He makes reading fun by rhyming everything in his books. The oath is a very good story for children to read. I think Kellsie's idea of making it a bookmark is a great way for kids to remember it and it would also have them looking at everyday to remind them it is important to read at least once a day. Also having Justin Bieber read The Cat and the Hat makes children want to read it because they love him and see him doing it.

  14. I love the oath in this blog! I think it is an awesome thing for kids to read and agree to because Dr. Seuss is such an influential author in a lot of children's lives. Knowing it was written by a fun and interesting author children might actually listen and appreciate the oath. I think it is perfect to hang in classrooms to really remind kids that they should be reading everyday, even if its a fun book written by Dr. Seuss. Justin Bieber was a nice touch too. Even though most people my age don't like him, he is a huge influence and role model for kids these days.

  15. Wonderful comments everyone! Keep them comming!

On Dr. Seuss's birthday, the principal of my school went around to every classroom and read a book by Dr. Seuss to the class. It did not matter in older grades that the book was too easy for them, they loved being read to and having the attention on them. It is also important to give praise to authors and show students how much we value books.

Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books? We would love for you to share with us!

  16. I agree with Kayla, I think Dr Seuss's books are timeless. I love how silly they are and the witty rhyming schemes that are used. I also love all of the new words he makes up for his rhymes, like in his book "There's a Wocket in my Pocket". The Justin Biiber video definitely sends out a positive message to his younger fans who might not be interested in reading yet. It's always nice when celebrities use their fame for an educational cause.

  17. I really liked the Dr. Seuss reading oath and think that it would motivate children to read. This was the first time that I have ever read that and if I was to read it when I was younger it would of helped me motivate myself to read. A lot of children like Dr. Seuss so they will relate to this oath and want to follow it. Also Justin Bieber is a big idol for most children these days so if they see him reading then it might make them want to read.
